It was mind-bendingly hard for Nino to work with the tension between him and Ohno. It had been almost three weeks since the ‘break-up’ and all was not well. Nino’s limbs ached for Ohno’s touch and screamed for the warmth of the other man’s body to be close to his. His head ached for the man’s smile and kind words, but Ohno hadn’t spoken a sincere word to him once. Only what was required to get by in work.

With the other members of Arashi, too, there was tension. Whether it was because of Nino’s harsh words to them on that day, or because they had no idea what was going on between their two friends, Nino didn’t know. All he knew was that he regretted the way things had turned out between him and Ohno. The conversation hadn’t gone the way he had anticipated and Ohno wouldn’t stay near him long enough to listen to his pleas of reason.

For the third time that day, Nino reached into his bag to pull out the little bottle of Advil he had taken to bringing along with him. It cleared his pounding headaches that he figured were a result of being away from his ‘Oh-chan’. He chuckled harshly when the words ‘withdrawal’ entered his mind as he dropped the pill down his throat and washed it down with a painful gulp of water, angry tears pricking the backs of his dry eyes.

The Mario theme song rang shrilly in Nino’s half asleep mind. He groaned and flipped his covers over his head, burying down into the warm cocoon of sheets. Eventually, the ringing stopped and he sighed into his pillow, bringing his head out of the cocoon for a breath of fresh air. He nestled his head into his pillow and let his eyes droop to a close, a tiny smile of near content appearing like a ghost on his lips.

Just as he was about to fall asleep again, his increasingly annoying ring-tone drilled into the deep silence of his room. He threw off his covers in an exasperated manner, a sneer laced on his lips. Whoever was calling him would not hear the end of it…

“What?!” He nearly yelled into the receiver, not bothering to look at the caller ID before he flipped the cell open.

“Woah, Nino… calm down.” It was Jun’s voice. He sounded stressed, but Nino hardly noticed in his anger at being woken up form the most peaceful sleep he’d had in weeks. Which, apparently, wasn’t all that peaceful after all.

“What do you want, Matsujun? You’ve got a minute before I hang up on you…” he threatened, sighing irritably and falling back onto his mess of a bed. He glared up at the ceiling, waiting for his friend and band mate to speak.

“First of all, it’s not even that late… I can’t believe you were sleeping.” He had guessed right, that Nino had been sleeping, or at least trying to, and Nino clicked his tongue impatiently. His eyes drifted over to the red, blinking numbers of his clock, though, and he saw that it was only 7:30 pm. He hadn’t even been asleep for an hour before Jun called.

“Second, I was wondering if you’ve seen Riida.” Nino’s heart leaped at the name and beat painfully in his chest. No, he hadn’t seen the man. Admitting that to Jun would be a feat, so he swallowed the bulging lump in his throat and answered with dry words.

“No, I haven’t. Can I go now?” He rubbed his head, the headache having returned one notch worse than it had been earlier.

“Not just yet, Nino. We need you to help us look for him. He’s been missing…”

“He’s a grown man, Jun! There isn’t any need to be worried about him. Now, please, let me sleep!” Nino pleaded into the phone. He didn’t think he could possibly face Ohno in any way. If the man really was missing, he would find a way back, wouldn’t he? He was older than them all, anyway. Old enough to take care of himself. Nino gulped air, trying to stop the painful lump from growing.

“No, Nino. This is serious.” The graveness in Jun’s voice froze Nino in his tracks, right before he was about to hang up on him. He took a breath and waited for Jun to continue, knowing he would. “Ohno’s okaa-san called me tonight, just a while ago. She had been trying to reach Ohno for hours, even before we got out of shooting. He hadn’t answered his phone. So I called up Aiba and Sho, but they hadn’t seen him after the shooting, either. So I got worried, and called you. Obviously something’s up, if he hasn’t replied to his okaa-san, right?”

Nino swallowed and stared blankly at the red numbers of his clock. It wasn’t late at all… yet he was getting increasingly worried about Ohno. His annoyance was starting to ebb as his desire to know what was wrong rose.

“I gotta go… Jun. Call me if anything happens.” Nino hung up the phone and threw it onto his bed, while making his way over to the closet as if in a dream. He knew that he was going to look for Ohno, how could he not? When Jun worried him like that… there was no going back on his actions now as he stole out f the house without even a jacket, forgetting his phone on the unmade bed.

Nino ran through the dimly lit streets, not bothering to take any notice in the blurring houses around him. He had a vague idea of where Ohno would be and was not interested in wasting any time getting there. His breath puffed in front of him in little white clouds but his skin refused to feel the cold of the night. His mind was on a one-set track to Ohno, determined to find the missing man and not willing to think of anything else.

When he reached the port, after a good few miles of running, Nino stopped to catch his breath thankful for the training from ‘Marathon’, even if it was a while back. The cold wind burned his tired lungs and dry throat, not helping him at all. He wiped cold sweat off his forehead with a shaky hand and swallowed, dry and tight. He licked his lips, looking around for the missing man, but couldn’t see any figures. He started to walk around the edge of the water, slowly to make sure he didn’t miss anything. Despite his previous tiredness, his eyes were lucid and wide, mind as awake as possible.

Still, as he searched he saw no one. Nino’s heart fell low in his chest and he squeezed his eyes shut, panic rising in his throat. If Ohno wasn’t here, at his favorite fishing spot, then where would he be?

Nino agonized over the thought, crouching low to the ground with his head in his knees as though he were suffering from nausea. He breathed deeply, attempting to calm his frantic heart, mind flitting through memories of places he had been to with Ohno in the past.

The reel of memories halted on one that had taken place over two years ago. Nino couldn’t remember exactly when they had been given the time to be free like they were in his memory, scared it was only a dream, but the scenery and the words came back to him as vivid as if it had been yesterday. He and Ohno were sitting on a grassy hill watching the sunset. Their hands were touching faintly, but noticeably so, though there was no one else on the windy hill top.

“This is my favorite place,” Ohno sighed contentedly in Nino’s memory, causing Nino to hiccup with the realization of how much he missed the man being close to him. The man in the memory looked up at the yellow and orange stained sky, dreamy. “But it’s the best when you’re here with me.” The words faded and the image crumbled. Tears fell from Nino’s eyes like they were the pieces of the memory. He didn’t care that he couldn’t place it.

He stood up and sniffed, nose starting to run from the cold. He brushed the tears from his cheeks and turned in the direction of the memory. Slowly at first, then as fast as possible, he ran to where he knew Ohno would be, the wind drying the tears his hands had missed.

Nino paused at the bottom of the hill and stared up at the figure seated near the top of it. The man’s back was towards Nino but he knew right away it was Ohno.

He trudged up the hill on wobbly, exhausted legs, attempting to calm his ragged breathing. His eyes watered from the cold air and goose bumps pricked his skin, finally realizing the cold assaulting it.

When Nino reached the sitting Ohno and breathed out his name, Ohno jerked, but didn’t turn in his direction. Nino sat to the right of the other man and brought his knees up to his chest, shivering from the cold. He had no idea what to say. Words stuck on his tongue when he tried to say them and he realized that those words made no sense anyway.

The silence loomed over the two like a rain cloud. Nino could feel the pressure and jolted at the sudden movement of Ohno moving closer to him. The wind blew hard and Nino cowered against it. A warm arm moved around his back, a hand held his waist, and a body pressed against the side of his.

“What are you doing here, Nino. It’s cold,” Ohno’s voice was soft and pained. Nino leaned into the man involuntarily, out of habit. He didn’t care anymore. Whether he had to explain the break-up or not, he was pleased just being with Ohno.

“I came to find you, Oh-chan,” he breathed out, heart pounding in his ears. He admitted to himself that he was nervous. He was scared of what Ohno would say or do. He didn’t want the fleeting moment of warmth to escape him once again.

Ohno remained silent for several minutes, sitting still as a statue next to Nino. When he finally spoke, the words hit Nino as if someone was chucking rocks at him.

“I… understand that you want to break up with me…” Ohno swallowed and Nino felt him shivering against him. He wanted to stop the man from talking right then, but bit his lip. Ohno needed to say what he needed to say.

“I’m sorry if it’s because of something I did. I can’t help but think that…” Nino lifted his face from Ohno’s chest to stare at the man’s pained expression. He would listen till the end and then fix this mess. “But I don’t want to break up, Nino. And if I did do something wrong, I want to fix it. I don’t want to break up.”

Salty lips pressed against Nino’s dry ones. He hadn’t realized that tears were dripping down his cheeks as well as Ohno’s. He relished the feel of Ohno’s soft and warm lips against his. A kiss that projected everything they were both afraid to say aloud.

After a few seconds Nino pulled away and sighed deeply, a wobbly, giddy smile working its way onto his face. “I didn’t want to break up with you, either, Oh-chan,” he stated, wiping a drooping hair out of Ohno’s eyes. “But you wouldn’t let me explain. There is nothing that you could do wrong.” He stood up, still shaky, and pulled Ohno along with him.

“Then why… would you say you wanted to break up?” Ohno questioned, not willing to leave it how it was. Nino clicked his tongue and laced his fingers through Ohno’s longer ones.

“It’s not real. Never ever could be real. Johnny… is mad. I can tell. And the fans… are getting out of hand. Ohmiya SK can still get along,” he chuckled, “But they shouldn’t know we’re dating. Just show them what they need to be shown…”

A smile was steadily spreading on Ohno’s lips. It was so bright that Nino stared. “I missed you, Kazu.” Ohno said, lips pressing desperately against Nino’s. The wind whipped their hair around their faces, but Nino and Ohno stood against it, knowing nothing could possibly tear them apart.
