In the two months since Masaki Aiba had moved into Satoshi’s dorm room, the two had become good friends. Masaki had come into Satoshi’s dorm from being transferred from dorm three because his dorm room had gotten “over crowded and stinky.” He arrived to Satoshi’s room with a huge lumpy duffel bag and a red suitcase that he was carrying instead of rolling. Satoshi had been on edge ever since learning he was finally to have a roommate, but when Masaki entered the room falling over himself with a huge smile to light up the room, Satoshi relaxed a bit.
“Konnichiwa! I’m Aiba Masaki. Please excuse the intrusion!” He bowed and Satoshi ducked his head in response, unable to tear his eyes from the young man.
Finally, as Masaki sat on the bed Satoshi hadn’t occupied to unzip his duffel bag, Satoshi realized that he hadn’t yet introduced himself. He stood slowly and walked over to the limby boy. “I’m Ohno Satoshi. Yoroshiku.” Then he pointed to the bag and asked, “Why’s it so lumpy?”
Masaki’s eyes lit up and he turned the bag upside down. Out of it came a pile of stuffed animals. “My animals!” he exclaimed.
“O-ouh~.” Satoshi said, fascinated. He had never seen so many stuffed animals outside of the toy stores. “Do they have names?” He sat on the bed next to Masaki who was animatedly telling Satoshi all the names. After that, the two seemed like they were tied together.
Masaki became Satoshi’s alarm clock and he didn’t mind. Suddenly the shade would shoot up and sunlight would poor into the room. Satoshi would turn over in his bed and stuff his face into his pillow until Masaki came and crawled on top of him. Then he got up. And he was thankful for that. He was a heavy sleeper; slept easily. Masaki saved him from being late every morning.
They had no classes together but often met in the halls and in the cafeteria for lunch. Satoshi noticed how the girls (who had a dorm on the other side of campus) would look at the two of them. He would look from them to Masaki and realize why. Masaki was always glowing. He was lanky, but in a good way. His slightly bleached hair fell into his face in a way that could almost be considered messy or unseemly, but not quite. It looked ruffled and rumpled to the extent that it just fell smoothly across his face. How that was accomplished, Satoshi would never know. He gelled his hair. Satoshi smiled. With or without the attention, Masaki gave him light as well.
“So, Oh-chan,” Masaki asked one day, calling him by his preferred nickname. He sometimes changed it everyday. “Do you do any clubs?”
Ohno smirked. They were at lunch and he was eating his favorite ramen. “I draw. I do art, I mean. I don’t think there’s a club for that, though.”
“Ehhh~. I figured.” Ohno chuckled. By the surprised expression on the other boys face, he hadn’t. He had probably just remembered the pictures and sculptures stranded around the room. “I play basketball.”
“I know, Aiba-chan,” Ohno said. He’d taken to calling the boy that. It was brighter and seemed to fit his bubbly personality. “I’ve seen you play.”
“Eh? Really?” Aiba stared at him wide eyed. “You’ve seen me play?” Ohno nodded, noticing a noodle hanging from Ohno’s lip and laughed.
~*~
Aiba knew Ohno hated it when he went to his family’s place, but he loved it. He also loved how Ohno looked like a puppy every Friday night. He knew how the other boy crawled into his bed when he was away because of how his animals where always unorganized.
“Ne Riida,” Aiba said one night. “You awake?”
“Who’s ‘Riida’?” Ohno asked. Aiba heard the ruffle of sheets as Ohno shifted.
“You are.”
“It doesn’t fit me at all, Aiba-chan!” He exclaimed. “There is no way I’m ‘Riida’.” Aiba laughed at the horror in his roommate’s voice.
“Oh-chan, then. Have you noticed how girls always stare at us?” His eyes, having adjusted to the dark, caught Ohno’s slight nod. “Have you heard the rumors?”
“Eh…” Aiba heard the faint sound of Ohno scratching his head. “No.”
“They, I mean the girls, think we’re dating. They’re rather amused by it.”
“Heh?” Ohno’s voice squeeked.
“Do you think living with another guy makes you… like guys?”
“Err… I dunno Aiba-chan. I think you can like anyone you want. Whether it’s a boy or a girl. As long as you like them.”
“Hora, that’s why you’re ‘Riida’. Come here.” Aiba watched Ohno crawl out of his bed and over to his. Aiba lifted the sheets and Ohno climbed in next to him. “Do you feel anything?”
“You’re warm,” Ohno mumbled, already on his way to sleepyland.
“You’re like a teddy bear!” Aiba said, elatedly squeezing Ohno tight. Ohno squeaked. Aiba couldn’t help thinking he liked the feel of another body close to his own.
The night before Aiba was to leave for his family’s house again, Ohno crawled into bed with him. Aiba was used to this and shifted his weight to pat the other boys head. “What’s the matter, Oh-chan?”
A strangled sound came out of Ohno’s mouth, more to the pillow than to Aiba. He turned his head into Aiba’s chest, pressing close. “Something’s wrong,” he said tightly.
“Is that what all the crumpled papers in the trash can are?” Aiba asked, remembering how the trash seemed to pole up more and more recently. Ohno moved closer in response. “It’s ok, Oh-chan,” Aiba soothed, feeling a bit awkward. Ohno was slightly older than him, almost by a year, but always seemed younger. Aiba wasn’t the best at dealing with serious situations, either. He stayed awake until Ohno’s breaths were slow and even. Then he slipped out of the covers and carried Ohno back to his own bed, as to not wake him in the morning when he left. “You’ll be fine, Oh-chan,” he mumbled groggily, tripping over the over flowing trash can and spilling the papers as her fell onto his bed.
